Who You Know

So this is a little behind, but it is still very exciting. Earlier this summer Ernessa Carter co-wrote and co-produced a promo for a series called Who You Know. She and her co-writers/producers entered the promo into a FX Channel competition to find the best pitch for a new series. Back in June they found out they were in the top 20. (YAY!) Result of the contest were announced on FX at the end of June (sorry about being so behind Ernessa). While they did not win, Ernessa's promo placed in the top 5. Congratulations Ernessa!!!!!!

Check out Ernessa's blog to see what she is working on next... I love the the movie reviews.

I am very sad to report that Megan Moritz was killed in a car crash on June 1, 2006. Megan was a resident of Morris House and biology major at Smith. After Smith she went on to the University of Iowa Medical School and was in the surgical residency program at Banner Good Samaritan in Phoenix at the time of her death. Further details are here.

If anyone would like to send a card to her parents please send me an email and I will send you their mailing address.

The 29-Year-Old Virgin

It's rare that I receive any news in my daily "Smith in the News" digest from the publications office that causes a double take, but today I did. Sarah DiMuro ('99) has caught the attention of everyone from Llyod Grove's Lowdown to Salon's Broadsheet to the Alumnae Association news feed. Sarah has paired up with Jane Magazine to help her lose her virginity before her 30th birthday. She is keeping a blog of her dates on the Jane website and anyone can log onto to nominate potential suitors.

Alumna Named Director of Annual Support, an Important Source of Financial Aid

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Smith College alumna Karen Boehnke will soon return to campus to assume the post of the director of annual support and volunteer engagement in the Office of Advancement.

Boehnke, a member of the class of 1999, will start Sept. 15, the first day of the college’s annual conference to celebrate the work of its alumnae volunteers.

“Karen brings tremendous talent, energy and commitment to working with Smith volunteers and staff to increase support of the college,” said Debra Thal, class of 1977 and chair of the Alumnae Fund. “We are delighted to have found an alumna with both strong volunteer and professional experience in annual giving.”

Viviat Acemdia Vivant Professores!

Apparently the randomness of my brain locked on Smith this morning, because I started humming Gaudeamus Igitur while commuting to work. Why this most impossible, at least for me, to sing tune popped in my head I will never know, but I thought I would share it with everyone.

Some interesting Wikipedia notes:
It has been known as a beer-drinking song in German and Dutch (and also United Kingdom and even Australian) universities by many generations of students. In Belgian universities, where drinking and singing is actually a common activity for students, it is one of the 'official' songs which are sung as the opening of these singing activities. The lyrics reflect a joyful embracing of the bacchanalian mayhem of life (especially life as found in fraternities and sororities) while simultaneously retaining the grim knowledge that one day we will all die. The song contains humorous and ironic references to sex and death, and many versions have appeared following efforts to bowdlerise this song for performance in public ceremonies. In private, students will typically sing ribald words.
